A1 Motor Stores is a mature commercial
trade association with an
enviable track record. It has much to contribute to its members, as
well as to the automotive retail sector at large.
The A1 Motor Stores History. Since it was
formed in 1982, (AIMS as
it was then) has become a major organisation. This is how it happened.
The short-lived GKN-Spa sponsored DIY
Motor Stores group of accessory
shops was all very well, but it had no standards for members. Its
demise in 1982 left a number of members seeing the possibilities of
an association of independent retailers...
But if there was to be a successor it
would have to be a very
different creature. High standards would have to be set - and
only shops that could meet them were accepted for membership.
The motor-trade press had been excited by the idea of an independent
retailers body and it was instrumental in bringing together some of
those who were to be what can now be described as 'the founding
fathers'. Some, like Coventry's Joe Elliott, had already been leading
lights in the DIY Motor Stores scheme, and others such as G&B Motor
Accessories Bill Garratt, had seen the pitfalls of such a group that
any 'tin-pot' accessory shop could join, and had avoided such
associations on purpose. Both were subsequently to become chairman
of what was first called the Association of Independent Motor Stores.
A letter went out from Joe Elliott
inviting interested parties to a
meeting on September 29 at the Spiders Web Motel, Watford. At the time
the press said that a group was foreseen 'owned by the members
themselves and run in a professional way'. The meeting was described as
'excellent'. 'It all seemed to come together', was the quote of one of
those present.
Thirty seven retailers constituted the
initial membership, with an
initial meeting being sponsored by car-care product specialist Holt-
Lloyd. In 1982 the members were still a long way from becoming what
is now one of the largest retail groups in the UK automotive
aftermarket. Under Joe Elliotts initial leadership, the association
quickly took off, even holding its own conference - in Majorca - in
1984. As Peterboroughs Tony Bate, a future chairman, pointed out at
the time of the associations 10th anniversary, five days in Majorca
were actually cheaper than two nights in Bournemouth. As time was
to quickly tell, these conferences were to become far more business
orientated than the previous DIY Motor Stores conventions.
There was initial suspicion about the
group from certain areas of
the distribution sector seeing AIMS as a threat to their set pattern
of trading. For independent retailers to have a voice was something
rather new. Quite quickly, though, the AIMS that was to become A1
Motor Stores took shape. In 1983 Tony Bate first brought up the
question of a corporate store image - something that was initially
turned down. Tony would not though let go of what he described as
his 'hobby horse' and eventually the A1 Motor Stores identity was
adopted. It wasn't until 1984 that the first brochure appeared, two
years later the first own branded product appeared - a 20/50 oil that
cost ?2.10. The Lutterworth offices were moved into by the headquarters
staff in 1988, and in October 1998 they moved to Peckleton were they
are based today.
Just to show how high standards had
become, 18 out of 20 Accessory
Shop of the Year awards went to A1 Motor Store members in 1991, quite
an improvement on 1985 when the association was even then proud to
point out that it had won seven regional awards, or 25% of the total.
A1 Motor Stores has naturally moved on
since those early days. It
now has members who must have been at school when the association
was founded. Some of those 'founding fathers' have now taken a well
deserved back seat while others have come forward.
Today, our Head Quarters are in
Peckleton, Leicestershire in the
UK. Although A1 Motor Stores is owned by the members, the Head Office
is the hub of the wheel. This is where the running of the association
takes place. It is a highly efficient 'centre of excellence' where
the members' and indeed the suppliers partners' are in good hands.
