Anchorage Winter
Adventures
City: Anchorage
Tel: +1 800 544 0988
Thousands jammed the streets to cheer drivers and teams for the ceremonial start of the
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. It's called "The Last Great Race" and, around
Alaska, interest in the Iditarod dwarfs the Super Bowl or any other event. Throughout
Alaska, the events leading up to the race dominate the media, continuing for days until
the finish. My wife Mary and I were sampling the winter activities around Anchorage, and
we quickly got caught up in the electric mood of the start of Alaska's most famous
sporting event. At the ceremonial start many viewers carried newspapers that featured
photos and biographies of each entrant. Strolling vendors offered pins, hats, posters and
other race souvenirs, while others sold cooked reindeer sausage, beverages and other
temptations.Local favorites like Jeff King, Dee Dee Jonrowe and Martin Buser loped their
sled dog teams through the sprawling block party to boisterous cheers and whoops.

For many years, knowledge of bird migration in the Near Islands was only fragmentary,
since they had been visited only sporadically by scientists. Then in the late 1970's, Dan
Gibson of the University of Alaska Museum did the first intensive studies of spring and
fall migration in the Near Islands, on Shemya Island. And beginning in the late 1970's, we
began annual spring visits to Attu Island that have continued to this day. We now have a
much more complete picture of bird distribution in the Aleutians.

camera, etc) and we will provide everything to keep warm and comfortable. We'll even feed
you on our 6-7 hour tours. That's right; when we get down the trail we will stop at a
beautiful scenic viewpoint and fix you up a meal that is bound to put a big smile on your
face. We also offer overnight tours during the summer months, which includes your tent,
sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and three meals. This is a popular trip, especially for those
who wish to ride in search of the caribou, which often roam the tundra in herds of
thousands. We have had occasion to view several thousand of these curious animals as they
have moseyed right through our camp. It is an indescribable experience to unzip your tent
door early in the morning and just lie there and watch as they slowly ramble past your
tent, often so close you could almost reach out and touch them. The best time to schedule
for caribou is between June 1 and July 15 although we have often seen large herds as late
as August 15.

people who lived through it. Our horses will then take us to the shore of the bay where

Black Diamond Golf
City: Healy
Tel: +1 907 683 4653
Black Diamond Golf Course takes its' name from the historic Diamond Strip Mine. The
Diamond Mine was developed in 1943 as part of the war minerals program of the US
government and was instrumental in easing the coal shortages resulting from World War II.
The coal lies in a formation known as the Nenana coal bed, a foot hill belt boarded in the
south by the high rugged masses of the Alaska Range and to the north by the broad flats of
the Tanana Valley. The coal was hauled by truck five miles down a gravel road to the small
railroad town of Healy (established as a mining camp in about 1905) where the railway
transported it to Fairbanks for use by the US Army. Although no longer active, and
partially reclaimed by the forces of nature, the Diamond Mine and its' effect on the
history of this area is still visible for all to see!

Chilkoot Charlie's
Promotions
City: Anchorage
Tel: +1 907 279 1692
Located in the heart of historic Spenard, Chilkoot Charlie's first opened its doors on
January 1, 1970 in what had been The Alibi Club. "Koot's," as it is
affectionately called by locals, began as a neighborhood watering hole with a live piano
bar. The bar was very limited in size then, occupying only the part of the building that
is now the South Long Bar. Owner Mike Gordon and a partner bought the bar having convinced
themselves that an Alaska-Theme bar would be successful in Anchorage. Upon purchasing The
Alibi Club, Gordon promised the doubtful former owner, Skip Fuller, that he would triple
the gross sales within a year. At the time, Gordon was also working at KHAR radio and NY
Life Insurance Co. in Anchorage. It was at KHAR that he met Alaskan author and radio
personality Ruben Gaines, and the two quickly became friends. It occurred to Gordon one
day that one of Gaines characters, Chilkoot Charlie, would be an excellent icon for his
new bar. It had once been suggested that the bar should be named the Humpie Bar or
Chilkoot Charlie's. Gordon invited Gaines to lunch and told him the idea. The bar would
get exclusive rights to the name Chilkoot Charlie, and in exchange, Gaines could sell his
books, cartoons, records, etc. from the bar. Gaines thought it was a great idea, and with
a hand-written contract, Chilkoot Charlie's was born. It is interesting to note that this
one lunch meeting has arguably done as much to add character and flavor to Spenard and
Anchorage as a whole, as any other event to date.Anchorage was about to become an oil
boomtown as oil was discovered in abundance on Alaska's north slope. Anchorage grew
quickly and Chilkoot Charlie's grew with it. By the end of its first year in business,
Chilkoot Charlie's had become Alaska's favorite bar. Gordon had indeed tripled the bar's
gross sales, and then some. Customers flocked to Chilkoot Charlie's to enjoy its Alaska
atmosphere and outrageous entertainment. The costumed bartenders (Gordon included)
provided laughs by the ton. A favorite was one of Gordon's characters called Rocky the
Flying M*ther F*cker. Gordon would wear a World War One infantryman's uniform, a leather
pilot's helmet, and scarf. Customers howled with laughter at the non-stop antics. Music
was provided by the bar's original band - The Rinky-Dinks, and later on by a piano player
by the name of Mr. Whitekeys. Mr. Whitekeys now runs The Fly-By-Night Club here in
Anchorage. It was he who coined our logo "We cheat the other guy and pass the savings
on to you!" The crowds grew steadily, and before long an expansion was needed.
