The Norton Agency came into existence in 1928 when Mr. W.L. Norton, Sr., a World War I veteran and former banker established an insurance office in Gainesville, Georgia. It demanded ingenuity and initiative on his part to survive the hard times of the depression years. He found it necessary to expand his insurance efforts from his home town into the 8 surrounding counties.
Gainesville saw progress in the next few years, until, in 1936, a devastating tornado ripped through the center of town causing the death of 136 persons, 786 persons lost their homes.
Soon many other industries relocated to the northeast Georgia area. Many were efficiently served by the Relocation Division of The Norton Agency. Over the next few years the firm established regional branch offices in northeast Georgia in the counties of Hall, Gwinnett, Forsyth, White, and Habersham from which they now serve a total of 10 counties. New Associates have been added and trained and The Norton Agency has become the leading independent real estate and insurance firm in northeast Georgia.
