The Upham Victorian Hotel and Garden Cottages is the oldest continuously operating hostelry in Southern California, situated on an acre of gardens in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. Close enough, but not too close, to Los Angeles, Santa Barbara possesses a beautiful natural setting by the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific. It is a red-tile, white-adobe, flower-decked town evoking romanticized Spanish California.
In 1871, travelers to Santa Barbara came by horseback, carriage or steamship to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and "healthful climate" and stayed in "a New England-style boarding house featuring the best accommodations of the place." Now 132 years later, The Upham Hotel, fully refurbished and restored, is still providing that same traditional hospitality. It is a full-service hotel, combining the bed-and-breakfast comfort of its 50 guestrooms and suites with the private luxury of five Garden Cottages and the convenience of on-site conference facilities.
San Francisco Focus magazine awarded The Upham with its California Grand Hotel Award for the Best Small Hotel in Southern California, and the adjoining restaurant, Louie's, has been nationally recognized by Travel & Leisure.
