We offer luxury accommodation in our
period residence on Via
Tornabuoni in Florence, Italy. We are located on the top floors
of a medieval tower, from where you can admire the view from our elegant
rooms and enjoy the convenience of being in the center of Florence. Step
outside and you are in the heart of Florence on
Via Tornabuoni, just a few minutes away from the main monuments
and museums in Florence. Come stay at our elegant accommodation
in Florence, Italy and enjoy Florence in elegance and comfort.
This palace, built in the middle of the
13th century was the
residence of the Gianfigliazzi family until the end of the 18th
century, and was the seat of the celebrated "Casino de' Nobili"
(club of the aristocracy).
Through the years a number of famous
personages and artists were
guests in the dwelling palace of this illustrious family, among
others: Alessandro Manzoni,Vittorio Alfieri and king Louis Buonaparte.
>From the beginning of the 20th
century to the end of World War II English
aristocrats and intellectuals, charmed by Florence, chose
the Pensione Piccioli in via Tornabuoni, in this same building, as
their favourite residence.
The Tower is located at the beginning of
Via dei Tornabuoni, just
across the Santa Trinita bridge, and next to the Church of Santa
Trinita.
The Santa Trinita bridge is located
between the Ponte Vecchio
and Ponte alla Carraia. It is the accurate copy of the bridge built
by Ammannati in 1557 and destroyed by bombs in World War II. The statues of
the Capricorn on either side of the bridge are of
particular interest: the sign of the Zodiac and personal emblem
of Cosimo I de' Medici, when seen from the river they appear to
be following with their eyes the person sailing on the river.
The Church of Santa Trinita was built in
the second half of the
11th century, and then enlarged and converted to Gothic style.
Inside, among other works of art, there is the Annunciation by
Lorenzo Monaco, the Federighi tomb, a marble work by Luca della
Robbia, and the frescos of the Cappella Sassetti and Adoration
of the Shepherds on the altar by Ghirlandaio. The doors of the
church are dated 1640.
In via dei Tornabuoni at the top floor of
the medieval tower
overlooking Piazza Santa Trinita, a new accommodation has been
created; a period residence planned to welcome a few choice guests
in a sophisticated and private atmosphere. The entrance is through
the ground floor hall of the palace, a private elevator reaches the
top floor where the lobby is located in a veranda offering a magnificent
bird's eye view of the historic centre of Florence;
from it there is access to the spacious terrace surrounded by
guelph crenellated walls with a breathtaking 360ø vista over
the city.

Splendid location in the historical
center of Florence on the bank
of the Arno river, a few steps away from Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi
Gallery.
All tourist attractions within easy
walking distance.
46 rooms with air conditioning,
bath/shower/toilet, safe,
hair-dryer, satellite TV, direct guest dialling for international
calls.
Sitting rooms, Meeting Room, Bar,
Internet point, elevator,
garage. Breakfast buffet.
The Balestri is located on one of the
edge points of the ancient
roman and medieval Florence. Two thousand years ago a river-port
to Pisa and the sea rose here and here the workers of the Guild
of Wool hang out their clothes. In one of the sitting-rooms of
the Hotel is a copy of a painting by Bellotto showing "la
Porticciola" (small port) on the Arno, the stairs going down to
the river and the washerwomen rinsing clothes. The near Old Bridge
with Via de' Benci form the eastern boundary of the city according
to the first municipal circle (1172) at that time formed by walls
and moats. Bardi, Alberti, Peruzzi are names of the families who
lived in the facing quarter of S.Croce. They built there loggias
and palaces and were owners of a few Chapels in the Franciscan
church of S.Croce.
At 6, Via de' Benci, in an elegant
Renaissance palace with an
inside courtyard, is set one of the most refined and most unusual
museums of the city: The Horne Museum (open 9 am to 1 pm daily,
closed on Sundays). It is out of the official tours, that's why
you can enjoy a peaceful visit of it. Its rooms host the art collections of
the eclectic English collector Herbert Percy
Horne, a friend of Oscar Wilde and Dante Gabriele Rossetti:
paintings, sculptures, pieces of furniture, instruments, a
variety of objects, tools and a library also containing miniated manuscripts
and incunabula, besides a lot of paintings of the
Florentine school of the Trecento and the Renaissance, works
imputable to Lorenzetti, Masaccio, Simone Martini, Filippino
Lippi, some paintings by Tiepolo and - masterpiece of the museum
- the picture of "Santo Stefano " painted on wood by Giotto.
In the small square named S.Remigio,
besides the Alberti's Tower
and Loggia, the Peruzzi Arch, the Bardi's Houses, the Visconti by
Modrone's Palace and the Neri Palace, is also one of the most
ancient churches of Florence, dated back to 1040 and consecrated
to S. Remigio, bishop of Reims. Originally founded as a hospital
and orator for the French pilgrims, the church was rebuilt in 1350
and contains a "Madonna in trono" attributed to the famous Gaddo
Gaddi (1280).
The Balestri-Wittum family has owned and
operated the Hotel
Balestri for over one hundred years, since 1888, when Fede
Balestri was born and whose father, Giovanni from Rosia near
Siena, a former greengrocer, began to manage this home. Since
then four generations have followed one another and now they
hold the record of the oldest hotel-keepers family in Florence.
The Balestri still boasts of the style and the care of the "Art
of Accomodating", which was a real Florentine guild since the
13th century. "Granny Fede" was the real archetype of hotelier,
whose style and charisma in accomodating guests went far away
the simple commercial fact of selling rooms. "Granny Fede" passed
through the damages and the following problems of two World Wars,
but she had always been able to raise again with courage, charisma
and with a great female ability of suggesting again her "House".
David H. Lawrence mentions the
"Pension" (without naming it expressly)
in his "Aaron's Rod" and we like to think that Fede Balestri could
have been the maid showing the famous writer the way to his room.
The hotel is like a home for the guest, so he expects to be
welcomed with his needs, his fears and his "expectation of
welcome". The true hotelier knows that the meeting with a guest
is something special, with its contradictions, its questions
and answers, its relationships, in a world that seems to privilege
aggressiveness and divisions. This is the style and the bet for
the staff at the Balestri today, where sons and nephews of
"Granny Fede", the founder, work with the original spirit of
the House.
The lifestyle of Hotel Balestri can be
described in Robert Musil's
(The classical and noble ideals of humanity,
internationality and dignity, together with the Hotel knowledge,
were something complete for her. She always had fresh flowers,
and she walked by with a dozen of small table-clothes to make
every room a small home. She had the quality to tell the right
thing at the right moment and she always spoke right to the heart
of her guests).
Multifunctional room in our basement for
up to 36 persons.
Completely restored in 1992. Along with the ground floor it is
part of the historical nucleus of our hotel, which can be dated
back to the 16 th century.
Several exhibitions of contemporary
artists sponsored by the art
magazine ECO D'ARTE MODERNA have taken place here as well as the
1993 XXXIø TROFEO CUPOLONE, a competition of art photography. Other than for
exhibitions Sala Ar/T serves as conventions and
conferences room.

The hotel encloses a lovely inner garden
with pool, a small jewel

among magnolias and wisterias, sunbathe or take a refreshing dip
in the pool. From the last floor you can reach the spacious
panoramic terrace, yet another one of the hotel's enviable assets
with a bar available for cocktails on sunny days. From here the
eyes take in an evocative, sweeping 360-degree vista comprising
of the elegant, sophisticated shape of the Duomo against the backdrop of
Florentine hills, the red cupola by Brunelleschi, the whiteness
of the marble embellished with green of the glorious Santa Maria Novella
faade and its soaring Romanic-Gothic bell tower. At sunset this wondrous
view lights up with all the nuances of red, yellow and
gold springing forth from rooftops and building faades.
Set in old Florence just a few steps away
from Santa Maria
Novella, Hotel Croce di Malta is the ideal place to find rest
after an intense workday, an important conference or a lengthy visit
to Florentine monuments.
The hotel is located in what up until the
mid 1800's was the old
Suore della Carit
(Sisters of Charity) convent, which offered hospitality
to Florence's "poor, virtuous maidens".
The convent was built on a pre-existing
building from Roman
times. Marble sculptures and reliefs date back from this period,
as well as a splendid column decorated with an Ionic capital that
can still be admired today in various areas of the hotel.
Its structure is a harmonious fusion of
Tuscan renaissance forms
and contemporary architectural design. The rooms and interior decoration
stem from essential, pure geometrical forms where
the meticulous play of full and empty shapes creates a special,
modern ambience.
All 98 rooms are decorated according to
the canons of classic
elegance, where the furniture is the result of meticulous
handcrafted workmanship and the hand-painted panels are reminiscent
of Tuscan works of art from the 15th and 16th centuries. The rooms' charm
goes hand in hand with the comfort of the most modern,
functional amenities such as satellite TV, mini-bar, direct-line telephone
and fast connection to the Internet.
Extremely functional, the bathrooms are
tastefully and harmoniously
decorated.
You can enjoy views of the green inner
garden or of the romantic
panorama from the Hotel Croce di Malta rooms, all with walls
decorated with stucco in the finest tradition of Florentine craftsmanship
and their own individual character and charm in
terms of colour and ambience. Moreover, most of the rooms in the
upper floors have a small private balcony.
For an even more exclusive stay 15 suites
are available, laid out
on two floors, where attention to detail and the exquisiteness of
the accessories are reflected on the elegance of the dcor.
Our guests may request access to the
panoramic terrace for outdoor
breakfast.
Our service is geared toward satisfying
our most sophisticated,
demanding guests without sacrificing the warm familiarity typical
of Tuscany. The reception desk, open 24 hours a day, guarantees efficiency
and promptness in all aspects of hospitality.
The hotel has a reserved area for the
arrival and unloading of
luggage. It is possible for the car to be picked up at the hotel
for storage at one of the car parks selected by the hotel.
A restaurant, a piano bar and a cocktail
lounge can satisfy all
your food and refreshment needs. The piano bar is the ideal place
to relax and meet new people surrounded by good music, special cocktails and
excellent wine.
The three functional conference rooms and
the enviable garden
with pool make Hotel Croce di Malta the ideal place for tourists
and businesspeople.
The restaurant, where the wood panelling
provides a warm
atmosphere, traditional Tuscan cuisine linked to the flavours of
the area meets international cuisine, thus also satisfying the
most refined palates. Here country tradition meets Tyrrhenian
Sea fishermen's tradition, so among specialities such as the
typical Florentine ribollita, aubergine and boletus mushroom
"Pappa", and Chianina beef with rocket, there are fresh seafood
dishes such as Caciucco alla Livornese or sea bass with aromatic
herbs.
Right next to the restaurant there is the
hotel's charming
cocktail lounge where a simple cocktail or a rich buffet can make
a break from a conference or from decisions at an important meeting more
pleasant.
The three conference rooms are
comfortable and unique due to the
design and decorations executed by skilful Tuscan craftsmen. They
can be prepared to host small art exhibitions, meetings and conferences,
with an eye toward satisfying all the specific
needs of each particular event.
Staff is available to organise the layout
of the conference
rooms. Basic equipment, such as an overhead projector or easel
pads and a sound system are available in all three conference
rooms. Also, upon request, the most modern audiovisual system
and secretarial services may be provided.

Another two statues in white marble, one

the first twenty years of the 1900's.
On one of the walls of the facade there
is a sun-dial in terracotta
glazed with three cherubs and a large mask. One of the three cherubs
is holding a bow and arrow whose shadow indicates the hour. From the second
half of the 1900's.
Again on the facade, in a niche, another
terracotta imaging Venus coming out
of a bath. From a recent epoch.
A bronze statue welcomes the guests
outside the entrance of the
hotel. Its picture is also on the first page of the hotel's brochure
and has practically become the "logo". With a height over 210
centimeters, it images a nude, young woman caught in a wind blowing
her thick hair back. A valuable piece by an artist from the early
1900's which characterizes his own personality in this very graceful
figure, coming from the French Embassy Palace in Moscow.
Inside, posed on the floor of the
reception area the "Leda con cigno"
a sculpture in white marble from the middle of the 1700's signed by M.
Rittemans with dimensions of about 80 by 60 centimeters.
In a corner of the main entrance hall
there is another sculpture of
a feminine figure again in white marble from the end of the 1700's
at a height of about one meter. Its expression is of a person who
seems to be battling the wind which is blowing her clothes against
her, with a hand over one ear appearing to try to hear something.
The entire figure including is finely sculpted and of high quality
workmanship.
Another bronze statue from the early
1900's at a natural height is
positioned in front of the bar. It is of David holding a sword and
bringing it down into its sheath with one foot placed lightly on
the just cut off head of Goliath in a proud but yet not arrogant manner. The
signature is of A. Mercier.
In the breakfast dining room there is a
statue of about 80
centimeters of an angel on his knees holding a candelabra, in white acquered
terracotta from the end of the 17 00's in style Robbiano.
Again in the breakfast dining room an oil
painting on canvas, by
the French artist E. Petit from the middle of the 1800's, of a rich
fruit basket with a woodsy background, a rather consistent theme
for this artist.
In the entrance hall a large (138 by 215
cm.) oil painting on canvas
of young, nude, women in nature. F.to Garolefe, 1930.
Again in the entrance hall another oil
painting on canvas with
an important cornice of about one meter by one meter imaging a
divinity of lightening. A restored piece from 1600, and probably
a fragment of a representation of more figures..
After a long day visiting museums or
shopping in Florence, there
is nothing more pleasurable than relaxing in the spacious swimming
pool of the hotel, immersed in a large garden.
Besides the pool, thanks to its position
in one of the greenest
zones of Florence, the hotel offers the possibility to go jogging
or to do open air sports in the Coverciano area where the Centro Tecnico
Federale of the Italian National of Soccer, is situated.
It is because of this particular
position, in the city but yet
in a crib of green, the hotel has become staying place for many important
figures of the soccer world.
The choice to not have a restaurant in
the hotel is due also to
the fact that nearby you can find some of the best restaurants
in Florence, famous for their traditional cuisine, paying attention
to the most minor details.
Some of these Florence Restaurants use
the names of some of the most famous
works by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, to which the hotel
itself takes its name, like "Il Piacere" and "La Capponcina".
